Help for Persistent Loneliness – How to get past feelings of desperation & despair

Persistent loneliness is hard to get past. It can be very troubling without intervention. You may feel yourself withdrawing even more because you feel lonely. It could leave you feeling sad, depressed, and hopeless.

If you’re lonely but aren’t sure why, it’s time to come up with some answers that are reassuring and comforting. You don’t have to be alone in your journey. The licensed therapists at Heart-Centered Counseling provide a safe space for you to explore your feelings, work on your relationships, and come up with ideas on ways to make your life less lonely.

Some solutions for combating loneliness include:

  • Discerning fact from fiction. Just because you feel lonely doesn’t mean that no one cares. Even if you feel like no one does, it may be because you haven’t been able to get past the feelings of defeat you’re currently experiencing. With the help of a therapist, you can learn see loneliness as an opportunity to work on your inner world and re-experience the outer world, instead of as a character flaw.
  • Reach out to others for help. Even if you don’t know anyone in your immediate geographic location that you can speak to or meet up with, consider finding a point of contact. Join a club, interest group, therapy group, or support group online  (e.g. through MeetUp) and let others know how lonely you feel so they can help you move past the feelings that you’re currently experiencing.
  • Come up with a plan that moves you out of your head. Self-care is essential for good mental and physical health. Create a list of things you can do when you’re feeling down. Even going for a quick walk around the neighborhood helps you come into contact with other people. Check one simple thing off your list as a start.

Trust in the counselors at Heart-Centered Counseling to help you get through the loneliest periods of your life. Having a dedicated therapist to work with is very beneficial because it allows you to communicate your needs with someone licensed and trained to assist you. Rather than spend more time alone, you’re in the company of someone who cares about your health and well-being.

Learning to Accept Yourself Just as You Are

Learning to accept yourself just as you are may be among the most difficult things to master in life. After all, we all have preconceived notions of what others expect from us that come early in life from teachers and parents. If you feel the pressure to constantly be more than who you are and feel you’re not enough, it’s time to learn all that you can about self-acceptance. Individual therapy can teach you how!

What You Gain from Individual Therapy Sessions

Individual therapy sessions help you achieve clarity about the innate value of your life. It makes you understand your worth as a person just as you are today, not who you’ll be in the future. Working with a licensed therapist makes it possible for you to see and value your needs and communicate those needs to others in positive and effective ways. You’re then able to get more out of your relationships, see yourself as a person of value, and problem solve with the intention of growing as a person not completely changing yourself from head-to-toe.

Self-acceptance isn’t always comfortable at the onset. However, the right tools can make the idea less foreign to you. Instead of beating yourself up for the mistakes that you’ve made, you can learn to be empathic toward your “humanness” and to celebrate the positive steps you’ve taken to improve your life.

Seeing a counselor regularly to work through your issues is definitely one thing to be proud of. It requires a level of commitment from you that you may have not been willing to provide in the past. It also allows you to see where you are in a sincere yet gentle manner. You can then see how the things that you survived long ago have shaped you and how you can heal into a place of loving yourself for all that you’ve been through and all that you are.

Let Heart-Centered Counseling Help You with Self-Acceptance

It takes courage to change. It takes courage to treat yourself with kindness and care. Learning how to love yourself unconditionally is something that we can teach at Heart-Centered Counselors. Change the most important relationship that you have, the one with yourself, with the help of one of our counselors.
